Pet Info:
Benny is a 3-year-old Poodle/Cavalier mix with an adorable face, a playful personality, and a heart full of love.
This handsome little guy loves going for walks and is always eager to explore with his people. At the end of the day, his favourite place is curled up in bed beside you. If you’re looking for a loyal companion who enjoys being close to his family, Benny is your guy.
Benny is house-trained, kennel-trained, and gets along wonderfully with other dogs and even cats. One of his most endearing (and entertaining!) quirks is that he absolutely loves giving kisses. Once he starts, it’s almost as if his “off switch” doesn’t exist!
Benny does have one important behavioural challenge that his future family needs to understand. He has resource guarding tendencies and may guard items that are important to him, including food, toys, blankets, or even something as simple as a piece of paper. Resource guarding is an anxiety-based behaviour where a dog worries about losing something they value. It isn’t because he’s trying to be “the boss”—it’s his way of protecting something he feels is important.
Because of this, Benny is looking for an adult-only home. He would do best with someone who understands dog behaviour or is willing to learn how to manage resource guarding safely and positively.
Benny has bitten in the past when someone tried to physically remove an item he was guarding, so honesty about his history is important to us. We want to find him a home where he can succeed.
The good news is that Benny has already made progress in his foster home. We don’t challenge him or try to take away the item he’s guarding. Instead, we simply give him space, and once he realizes no one is going to take it from him, he relaxes, loses interest, and happily rejoins the rest of the pack. While this doesn’t mean the behaviour has disappeared, it does show that understanding and appropriate management make a tremendous difference.
Benny deserves someone who will see beyond this one challenge and appreciate the wonderful little dog he truly is. He’s affectionate, enjoys his walks, loves to cuddle, gets along well with other dogs and cats, and will reward the right family with unwavering companionship, endless kisses, and a lifetime of loyalty.
If you’re willing to understand Benny instead of trying to change who he is overnight, you may just discover an incredible best friend waiting to come home.
